Surrealism
Acrylic on canvas
40 x 60”
I now knew that God didn’t fit in a box, and I found freedom in His plans for me. But when I started this new painting, everything came to a screeching halt. I felt connected to God, but to create an authentic surrealist portrait, I had to know Him deeply. Surrealism pushes boundaries, blending reality with the unconscious, revealing hidden truths beyond surface appearances. I realized I couldn’t depict Jesus authentically without understanding Him beyond surface-level knowledge. I’d heard bits of scripture at church, but I hadn’t truly explored the Bible myself.
God made it clear that wasn’t enough, and I felt convicted to read His Word—my first real conviction. As a visual learner, reading was a struggle, and the process felt daunting. So, I paused the painting and shifted to work on an abstract piece while I recommitted to reading the Bible. I knew to fully understand His nature and truth, I had to approach Him with the same depth and openness that surrealism requires— no longer content with fragmented knowledge, but seeking the fullness of His revelation.
“The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” Hebrews 4:12
